Wali Hawes Potter's Diary

Artist-in-Residence in Iga 2004

Iga is an important centre of pottery production in Japan with a very strong tradition which can be seen in the pieces associated with the Japanese Tea Ceremony. The good news about Iga, a town situated in Mie-ken, Central Japan is that there is a slow but determined revival in the area which can be seen in the opening of new shops and galleries also a centre dedicated to the production and history of the area. Coinciding with this is the celebration of an Artist-in-Residence programme. The programme started last year with the participation of 4 artists covering various mediums in sculpture. There were also many cultural activities and workshops associated with the event. On the 15th July-30th September will see the celebration of a second programme. I will be participating as selected artist building and firing a set of the now celebrated Fire Trees. From the 20th July till the end of August will see the second Artist-in-Residence programme taking place in Aoyama-cho, Iga, Mie-ken. Brainchild of Morita Kotaro this year we will see the participation of the following artists. Ikawa Saiko, Ikeda Joicho, Oiwa Hisano, Onishi Osamu, Tonoiso Hidetsugu and Wali Hawes. Mainly focussing on sculpture we shall see work in several mediums-wood, stone, metal and clay. During the programme several hands-on workshops will run concurrently. Don`t miss the firing of the Fire Tree. From the 5th-13th June an exhibition is on show at the Aomayama-cho, Yakuba or Town Hall. Apart from the artits who will be in residence other local an invited artists are participating covering a wide range of the arts. Sculpture, painting, ceramics, glass, washi, print making, drawing, etc/ http://www.iga2004.jp/ Sorry Japanese only! The artist-in-residence programme finished for me in the sense I am no longer in Aoyama but back home slaving over a hot wheel though an exhibitiopn of the work produced is on show at Aoyama Hall till the 19th Sept. Indeed it was a great experience but really tough. An artist-in-residence programme is unlike anything else and I have done a-i-r in the UK (Wysing Arts) India (Sanskriti Kendra) Spain (Fundacion Noesis) and France (Art-Sud in Reunion) I have never been fixed to any time schedule like in Aoyama and times were carefully monitored. The incredible heat and three typhoons made life difficult. We worked in the Sports Centre and were housed in a local sake brewery. Still, the incredible support from the volunteer staff and locals plus Aoyama Town and all thanks to Morita-san of the NPO for his support and brainwave in getting it started. It looks like it will continue but will be Bienal only and only open for sculpture.
