Bienal International of Contemporary Ceramics, Fuji 2004

From the 24th April-27th June at the Nakatomi Museum of Contemporary Fine Crafts the IV Bienal International of Creative Ceramics was held. The show was divided into three sections. A section dedicated to Contemporary Spanish Ceramics which saw the works of such giants as Arcadio Blasco, Enric Mestre, Maria Bofil, Angel Garraza etc together with newer and upcoming lights such as Augustin Ruiz de Almodovar, Rosa Cortiella, Juan Antinio Sangil etc. There was also a show of a group of Japanese artists and pieces that entered into competition. The Grand Prix was awarded to Nomura Hiroaki for "Cloud 03-3Glowing hues reflected by Sunlight" The show was displayed in two main areas of the museum. The curator Mr Yoda explained that the aim of the Spanish contingent was to introduce to the Japanese public the vibrant currents in Contemporary ceramics. I applaud this iniciative because here in Japan we need to go beyond a perception of foreign pottery being basically the Anglo-Oriental tradition or Californian Funk. I look forwrd to the next edition and especially to more wok by the newer generation of young Spanish artists. Viva la Ceramica! conyo.
