Three months in India

I think I got geared up for a good time because of the great way I was treated by the staff at the Indian Consulate in Osaka and what an amazingly colourful Visa Appplication form. Can`t beat that! So almost as soon as I touch down at Delhi Airport I am at a meeting at The Delhi Blue Pottery Trust with Ravi Batra to sort out details about the workshop which was to be held at Sanskriti Kendra. The workshop was on Soda Firing and Spanish Lustres. Main thing was to get a kiln built for the soda firing. A cat-arch type was designed and built but results were disappointing. More time was needed to test out and insulate the kiln better. I should have stuck to my idea of having a smaller kiln because of the problems that people have re access to fuel. There was a gas kiln for Spanish Lustres which I modified slightly as I was`nt happy with heat circulation arrangement. We got up to temperature several times but could only almost get the lustres. We needed to have tested materials more thoroughly before the firings. I know this to be the case because successful firings were done at Priya Sen`s studio with materials from Spain and Japan and which I had experience working with. The potters who attended the workshop were great and you can`t beat the setting of the Sanskriti Kendra for working in. Meeting other artists from Peru, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina was really positive. We were also surprised one day to have Shalman Rushdie drop by. Didn`t ever think he`d be interested in pottery but enjoyed the explanations about Spanish Lustres and what we were up to. We also built \
