How not to organize a festivalOn the 25th-26th Oct the 1st World-Art Gallery was held at the Miako Messe in Kyoto. The event was trumpeted by the organizers as an event that would be like a Renaissance for Kyoto the city being the cultural soul of Japan. It would bring together some of the best in Contemporary Crafts and that in the future it would also be celebrated in Paris, New York and London. It also claimed support from International Organizations and Kyoto City.It would also be widely promoted and reported in the mass media, attract galleries and people related to design. The presence of these people were as evident as the 1st Airborne Div at the local masjid. The event did draw artists, craft workers and designers from as far away as Tokyo. You can imagine what a shock it was for us all!!! Almost nobody turned up, a brief interview on local radio saw the organizers refer to the event as a flea market and the much trumpeted Booth Contest proved to be a damp squid and only after protests began to flood in did the organizers announce the winner. Your average "mela" is better organized and the food served was worse than what you would find in a refugee camp! It is so sad that such potential is wasted. The hall was superb and the work on show though not to compare with festivals abroad was certainly good. Why these people don`t open their eyes and learn! Why can`t some people here in Japan stop hiding behind their incompetence under the guise that here in Japan things are different and foreigners can`t understand Japanese feeling! Their is no excuse and they could learn from the organization of the World Wood-Fire held in Aomori in 2002. As can be imagined the web pege can`t be accessed and as we know it World-Art Gallery has disappeared off the face of the earth! It will take a long time for the reputation of Kyoto to recover from the damage done and although we can be blamed for being so naive if we Craft Workers very better organized things like this would never happen and we could even see to it that we organize events like the ceramics festivals in the UK, Spain, Holland, France etc. 22/12/2003
